As a ski patroller, much of your work happens on snow\u2014whether you are transporting rescue toboggans&nbsp;with patients&nbsp;or carrying medical equipment across challenging terrain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We conduct this evaluation at the start of the process for two main reasons:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Safety First:<\/strong>&nbsp;Our priority is keeping everyone safe on the&nbsp;slopes\u2014including you, your teammates, and the people we help every day.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protecting Your Investment:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Advanced First Aid course requires&nbsp;a significant&nbsp;commitment&nbsp;of&nbsp;time and effort. We want to verify your skiing or boarding level upfront so you can move forward into the program with confidence.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2fcb7f61c91026a25f2ffc25ab000c08\" style=\"color:#a6192e\"><strong>Ski\/Snowboard Evaluation Day Schedule\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have registered and paid your fees&nbsp;for the evaluation, you will receive a confirmation email with specific meeting locations and directions.&nbsp;The schedule is generally as follows. Your evaluation will be based on the&nbsp;stronger&nbsp;of your two attempts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Finding Your Rhythm:<\/strong>&nbsp;We understand it takes a moment to settle in. Your first few turns are not&nbsp;evaluated to allow you to find your flow.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus on Consistency:<\/strong>&nbsp;We do not provide coaching or technical feedback during the evaluation.&nbsp;We\u2019ve&nbsp;found that trying to adjust your technique mid-test can be distracting; we want you to ski naturally and comfortably.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Video Recording:<\/strong>&nbsp;We may record runs for internal training or&nbsp;to provide&nbsp;detailed feedback during&nbsp;your&nbsp;debrief.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zone vs. Resort Standards:<\/strong>&nbsp;This evaluation is for the Calgary Zone&nbsp;level. Please be aware that individual ski resorts may require&nbsp;additional&nbsp;skill&nbsp;evaluation&nbsp;specific to their terrain.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4e77bcce39246f74d8111f282b025cc6\" style=\"color:#a6192e\"><strong>What to Expect: Evaluation&nbsp;Objectives<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, you will find descriptions and videos of the specific skills we evaluate.&nbsp;At this time, we only have video demonstrations for skiing.&nbsp;Snowboarding videos are in development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Objective #1: Short Turn<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Description<\/strong>:&nbsp;These are&nbsp;<strong>steered turns<\/strong>&nbsp;made&nbsp;<strong>within&nbsp;a&nbsp;1 cat width (15 feet) corridor<\/strong>. We are looking for&nbsp;&#8220;<strong>consistent intermediate speed with consistent turn shape<\/strong>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Terrain<\/strong>: Groomed blue or black runs&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Demonstration Videos<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cVuN_pDWEmc\">Short Turn &#8211; Framing and Orientation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Go Horizontal:<\/strong>&nbsp;Always record in&nbsp;<strong>landscape (horizontal)<\/strong>&nbsp;mode. It&nbsp;provides&nbsp;a much better view of the slope and your turn shape.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capture the Full Body:<\/strong>&nbsp;Ensure your entire body is visible throughout the run.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Avoid Zooming:<\/strong>&nbsp;Zooming often makes the footage shaky or blurry.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;better to have the skier move toward and away from a fixed camera.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Choosing the Right Spot<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The &#8220;2\/3 Rule&#8221;:<\/strong>&nbsp;Set&nbsp;up&nbsp;so we see&nbsp;roughly&nbsp;<strong>10\u201312 turns<\/strong>&nbsp;as you come toward the camera and&nbsp;<strong>6\u20138 turns<\/strong>&nbsp;as you ski away.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Terrain:<\/strong>&nbsp;Choose a run with a clear, consistent &#8220;fall line&#8221; (straight down). Quick Technical Checks<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clean the Lens:<\/strong>&nbsp;A quick wipe of the lens makes a massive difference in snow glare!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lighting:<\/strong>&nbsp;Try to avoid filming directly into the sun.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep it Raw:<\/strong>&nbsp;No professional editing is&nbsp;required. Get the Mileage In<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Resort Over Backcountry:<\/strong>&nbsp;We recommend practicing at a ski resort rather than in the backcountry. Laps on groomed runs, powder crud, and&nbsp;moguls allow for the repetition&nbsp;that&nbsp;makes navigating&nbsp;different&nbsp;terrain feel like second nature.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Variety is Key:<\/strong>&nbsp;Enjoy your runs&nbsp;and ski&nbsp;naturally, but&nbsp;also take time to ski with intention.&nbsp;Practice short- and long-radius turns, navigate moguls, and find some &#8220;crud&#8221; or&nbsp;variable&nbsp;snow.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Confidence in different conditions:<\/strong>&nbsp;Variable conditions&nbsp;can be&nbsp;your best teacher. Spending time in flat light or on hardpack helps you fine-tune your &#8220;feel&#8221; for the snow, making you a more resilient and capable skier or rider.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. While backcountry or touring setups are great for the skin track, they can sometimes make it more difficult to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;the&nbsp;techniques&nbsp;required&nbsp;for the evaluation.&nbsp;Note that you may use backcountry gear for the evaluation if you wish; however, backcountry gear is not&nbsp;permitted&nbsp;for ski patrol duties.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tune Your Gear:<\/strong>&nbsp;Ensure your skis or&nbsp;board&nbsp;are properly waxed and your edges are sharpened.
