By Amy Scullion, Board Director (amy.scullion@skipatrol.ca)
The board of directors of the Canadian Ski Patrol is seeking candidates to join its Financial Oversight Committee (FOC). Current available roles include chair of the committee as well as a minimum of one, up to a maximum of three, committee members.
Background
The FOC was established as a committee of the board of directors to provide financial oversight and advice, ensuring the financial integrity, transparency, and stability of the CSP. Acting in an objective, autonomous capacity, the FOC serves as liaison between the board, management, and external auditors.
The FOC is comprised of no fewer than three independent members as well as a member of the board serving as ex-officio. The current chair and two current members of the FOC have reached the ends of their terms, and the board is seeking to fill the vacant roles to further support the growth and financial viability of the CSP.
The role
As a committee member, you will provide insight, guidance, and support to help safeguard the organization’s financial health. Key responsibilities include financial review and analysis, audit and risk management, investment and tax compliance oversight, regulatory compliance, and financial safeguarding, reporting and stakeholder engagement.
In addition to the responsibilities of a committee member, the chair of the FOC reports directly to the board and has the added responsibility of committee leadership and governance.
Ideal candidates for both roles will have a strong background in accounting, corporate management, finance, or financial analysis, with a preference for those holding a CPA or equivalent designation. These roles require a commitment to upholding best practices in financial oversight, compliance, and ethical stewardship of resources to advance the organization’s mission.
Becoming a member of the FOC is on a volunteer basis. Time commitment varies from month to month, reaching 10 to 15 hours per month, primarily during budgeting time and again during the audit period.
