The Canadian Ski Patrol (CSP) has updated both its bylaw and its regulations as part of a broader governance modernization initiative. This initiative was supported by the volunteer CSP Board Governance Committee of Gord Joorisity, Fred Haight, Richard Asselin, Mike Palamarek and David Peer.

The governance modernization was designed to help CSP remain a strong, member-focused organization while providing greater clarity, flexibility, accountability, and support for volunteers across Canada.

The good news?

For most members, your day-to-day patrol activities will remain largely unchanged.

What is changing is how CSP organizes, governs, and supports those activities behind the scenes.

What's changing?

The proposed governance framework creates a clearer structure for CSP operations:

New governance hierarchy

  1. Articles
  2. Bylaw
  3. Regulations
  4. Policies

In simple terms:

  • The bylaw explains how the CSP is governed.
  • The regulations explain how the CSP operates.
  • Policies provide detailed guidance for everyday activities.

This structure makes it easier to keep CSP current and responsive without repeatedly changing foundational governance documents.

What will members notice?

What is not changing?

The proposed changes do not alter the core values or mission of CSP.

  • CSP remains a volunteer-driven organization.
  • Members continue to play an important role in governance.
  • Divisions, Zones, and Patrols remain integral parts of CSP.
  • Safety, service, professionalism, and community remain at the heart of everything CSP does.
  • Member representation continues to be a fundamental part of the governance model.

The bottom line

The proposed bylaw and operational regulations work together to create a governance framework that is:

  • More modern
  • More accessible
  • More flexible
  • More accountable
  • Better equipped to support members and volunteers

Most members will see little change in their day-to-day patrol activities. However, they will benefit from a stronger organization with clearer governance, better protections, improved participation opportunities, and greater flexibility to meet future challenges.

In one sentence

The proposed governance updates are designed to help the Canadian Ski Patrol remain a strong, adaptable, member-focused organization while preserving the volunteer spirit and community that have always defined the CSP.
