As part of these efforts, we want to discuss the value of adopting a calling-in versus a calling-out approach when addressing problematic behaviours, biases, or comments in our workplace and patrol environment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #a6192e;\"><strong>What\u2019s the difference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Calling-out approach:<\/strong> This method involves publicly pointing out someone\u2019s behaviour or comment as inappropriate, often to hold them accountable. While this approach can raise awareness about specific issues, it can also lead to shame or defensiveness, potentially halting meaningful dialogue.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Calling-in approach:<\/strong> A more compassionate alternative, calling-in focuses on private, respectful conversations to build understanding and foster growth. This approach invites people to reflect on their actions, ask questions, and learn without feeling shamed or ostracized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color: #a6192e;\"><strong>Why calling-in matters for the CSP<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our goal within the CSP is to create an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. The CSP thrives on teamwork, trust, and shared responsibility, and how we engage with one another reflects those values. By embracing a calling-in approach, we focus on:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Growth and learning:<\/b> Recognizing that not every misstep is intentional, and people need space to learn and improve.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Building stronger teams:<\/b> Encouraging open communication and fostering psychological safety, where members feel comfortable discussing complex topics.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Sustaining long-term change:<\/b> Shifting from punishment-based reactions to a supportive culture of accountability and improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"color: #a6192e;\"><strong>When and how to call-in<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There may be instances where behaviours or comments must be addressed immediately to prevent harm. However, a calling-in approach can lead to more meaningful change when the situation allows. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Private conversations:<\/b> Speak to the individual one-on-one where they can reflect without feeling judged.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Assume good intentions:<\/b> Approach the discussion from a place of curiosity rather than accusation\u2014ask questions to understand the individual\u2019s perspective.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Explain the impact:<\/b> Help the person understand how their words or actions affected others rather than focusing solely on their intent.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Offer support:<\/b> Provide resources or suggestions for learning and improving moving forward.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li><b style=\"color: #a6192e;\">Follow-up:<\/b> Check in after the conversation to show that the goal was to foster growth and maintain relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"color: #a6192e;\"><strong>Creating an inclusive patrol culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The CSP thrives when all members feel included and empowered. By adopting a calling-in mindset, we can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage more meaningful conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Build resilience within our teams by emphasizing continuous learning and improvement.<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-default\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:0px;border-color:#ffffff\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Strengthen our patrol culture, ensuring every member feels supported in their personal and professional growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Equity and inclusion work is ongoing, and no one gets it right all the time.
