Crawford (ap.crawford@skipatrol.ca)

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is given by the Governor General in recognition of exceptional volunteerism by Canadians over a wide range of fields from across the country. It pays tribute to their extraordinary dedication and commitment. These exceptional volunteers embody the caring country we aspire to build.

For more than 60 years Doug MacLean has been an active member of the CSP in Nova Scotia and has had a hand in training many, many recruits over the years. Many have gone on to become trainers themselves or to hold positions on the CSP’s national management team and board of directors.

He has always been willing to step up and take on tasks at all levels of the CSP that others were not willing to challenge, all done with a smile or joke to keep everyone working together. Over the years he and a group of fellow patrollers took their camaraderie and expertise across the country to spread the good word and have a little fun in the process. When the Far Easterners Ski and Whine Club showed up, you knew a good time was to be had.

Many years ago, Doug was recognized as CSP Life Member No. 28, and he has just kept on contributing in a big way since then, at all levels of the CSP.

In the words of Atlantic East Division President Meaghan Kells,

“Doug’s unwavering dedication for more than 60 years is inspirational. His commitment to the Canadian Ski Patrol, from co-founding the Nova Scotia chapter to serving in numerous leadership roles at local, regional, and national levels, has set a gold standard for volunteerism. Doug’s tireless efforts in training, mentoring, and patrolling have not only ensured the safety and well-being of countless individuals but have also fostered a strong, supportive community within the CSP.

“His humility, humor, and steadfast dedication have left a lasting mark on all of us. His legacy of service and leadership continues to inspire new generations of patrollers. We are incredibly proud to have Doug as a member of our division and grateful for his extraordinary contributions.”

On November 2, 2024, Doug was presented with his medal at the awards banquet held in Halifax. Below are some photos that captured the occasion.

Congratulations Doug on receiving such well-deserved recognition.

<figure id="attachment_18956"
