Cultural differences include, for example, situations where male patrollers are forbidden from touching female patients for religious reasons and patients who have a fear of people in uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Patrollers noted certain options to assist communication:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Enhanced non-verbal communication:<\/strong> \u201cSo with a lot of pointing, a lot of hand gestures and especially some smiles, I got through most of those situations without much trouble.\u201d<br \/>\n(Ian Izzard, Laurentian Zone, Que. &amp; Gatineau Zone, Que.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>CSP pocket report form:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026I used my CSP pocket report form so the casualty could indicate on the body drawing just where it hurt.\u201d (Robi Roncarelli, Kawartha Zone, Ont.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patrollers who speak additional languages:<\/strong> Ski areas with more patrollers can offer first aid in different languages. \u201cThe best way to deal with cultural competency and language barriers is to recruit for diverse language speakers and cultures.\u201d and \u201cCSP members who go to events and participate in new Canadian experiences tend to be better able to adapt to emergencies with people of diverse cultures.\u201d (Chris Paci, Superior Zone, Ont.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electronic translators, apps and services: <\/strong>A variety of electronic supports are available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First <\/strong><strong>Aid communication board:<\/strong>various-sized boards\u00a0illustrating\u00a0body parts,\u00a0with a keyboard\u00a0and a pain scale. First aid communication boards are\u00a0inexpensive, easy-to-use tools\u00a0that transcend language\u00a0barriers\u00a0because the exchange is non-verbal and visual.<br \/>\nInterested in\u00a0obtaining a first\u00a0aid communication board and learning how to use it?<br \/>\nContact Kelly-Anne Rover, a long-term patroller in the Central Zone, Ontario at<br \/>\nFirst In &#8211; Visually Speaking. What works best may be a matter of individual preference.<\/p>\n<p>Is it time to spend more time training ski patrollers how to communicate more effectively with persons from different ethnic\/religious cultures? What about those with poor language skills, whether they are immigrants or people with conditions\/disabilities that affect how they speak and process information?
