2016 Canadian Consensus Guidelines on First Aid and Resuscitation Training

The Advanced First Aid training Program with the Canadian Ski Patrol is in depth and taught by experienced Medical First Responders.

The skills, knowledge, and experience you will gain will ensure that you are comfortable dealing with any situation that you might encounter, on and off the slopes.

Instruction includes individual learning via e-learning modules, classroom lecture, skills practice, and scenario based learning at 2 field days and is taught by local Ski Patrollers who have completed the CSP Instructor Certification Program.

At the end of the Advanced First Aid course, National written and practical exams are completed by candidates and returning patrollers.

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Infectious Diseases and Universal Precautions
  • Patient Assessment (Priority Survey, Secondary Assessment, Transport Decision)
  • Chest Injuries
  • Shock and Severe Bleeding
  • Head Injuries
  • Spinal Injuries
  • Wounds
  • Dressing, Bandages and Slings
  • Fractures, Dislocations and Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Immobilizing Fractures, Dislocations and Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Medical Conditions
  • Environmental Injuries
  • Poisoning, Drug and Medication Abuse
  • Miscellaneous Treatments
  • Pediatric First Aid
  • Transporting the Injured

Your Basic Life Support training is conducted at a Health Care Provider (HCP) level and consists of 5.5 hours of classroom lecture, hands on practice, field work (scenarios), skills demonstration, and written exam.

Training covers:

  • Medical Emergencies
  • Choking (Adult, Child and Infant)
  • CPR (Adult, Child, and Infant)
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Supplemental Oxygen Administration
  • Basic Airway Management

On-Snow Rescue training begins once the snow flies and our local resorts open for the season. Training takes place in small group sessions at your home resort and is lead by dedicated patrollers who have completed the CSP Instructor Certification Program.

The training program takes place over a weekend and topics include

  • Ski Area Orientation
  • Incident Site Manangement
  • Communications
  • Rescue Toboggan Operations
  • Snow Vehicle Operations
  • Local Subjects (Search and Rescue, Avalanche Awareness, High Angle Extrication)
