If you planning to venture into an uncontrolled area always leave a trip plan with family or a friend letting them know where you are going and when you plan to return.  It is recommended that you take an avalanche awareness course so you are able to recognize the dangers.

When skiing or snowboarding in the sidecountry or backcountry, you need to carry the proper gear (see below for a list of suggested gear), know the avalanche danger, be able to recognize avalanche terrain and be skilled in avalanche rescue.

Backcountry Checklist

  • Avalanche airbag backpack or backcountry pack
  • Beacon
  • Shovel – we suggest a proper avalanche shovel so it fits into your back
  • Probe – a dedicated avalanche probe
  • Navigation equipment – map, compass, GPS, altimeter
  • Emergency gear – first aid kit, repair kit, bivy sack, headlamp
  • Down or synthetic jacket for insulation
  • Waterproof shell
  • Warm hat & extra gloves
  • Extra mid and base layers
  • Eye protection – goggles or sunglasses
  • Food & water
  • Cell phone, radio, or satellite phone

Avalanche safety and companion rescue both require training and continuous practice.
